This piece is beautiful! These 2 sentences really stuck with me: 1. "Releasing an emotion requires you to stop being the emotion and start witnessing it–consciously observing it."
2. If we are sincerely committed to emotional freedom, we stop running from our triggers. We start using them."
I wish to share from my own experiences that releasing emotions do become much easier when we can see that we are not our emotions or the mind. We have them (Emotions and Mind) and they are our tools to use but they should never define or dictate our lives and decision making process, we should be the ones to consciously use them!
When we decide to stop running from our triggers and start to consciously use them, we end the karmic cycle because we are now using them as an opportunity for liberation.
Sometimes easier said then done however if we stick to the process the mind and our awareness will continue to become very sharp.
P.S. I love Mickey Singer! Have you ever been to Temple of the Universe here in Gainesville? He gives talks a few days a week in the evenings.
Sydney, thanks for the question. The beauty of this process is that you don’t need to know anything about the history of the emotions. You don’t even need to be able to label them.

I get the value of not needing the whole story in the moment. Because you're suggesting to release only from the body, correct?
So what are your thoughts on root cause over time which allows for mind integration?
Emotions and pain are tied to unresolved grief from earlier experiences (especially childhood), and understanding that was actually what allowed me to process and release them.
Otherwise, how is pain released without both mind and body integration?
Do you see a role for that kind of deeper understanding in the process, or do you feel it’s unnecessary altogether?
Sometimes when people delve into the story, it makes the feeling present so it can be released. But using the mind to explore the past is not necessary.
Emotions tied to unresolved grief do not resolve without some level of understanding.
According to your model, if someone endured abuse in childhood and was manipulated, they don't have to understand the why. They can continue the relationship without understanding it caused the original pain. Then harm continues much into adulthood.
So why do adult children go no contact? When they could just feel anger and punch a pillow?
Or take the death of a loved one. Without accepting the grief of reality, we just feel the emotions and overlook how or why they died?
Patterns like abuse persist without understanding, grief and acceptance.
Id encourage you to consider expanding your model.
It’s sometimes nice to have clear steps for dealing with difficult experiences. This is helpful in teaching folks to directly confront difficult emotions in practical ways. Thanks for sharing.
Yes witnessing/sitting with the sensation is necessary and I also find that a comforting touch on my heart or where ever the sensation is located is supportive. In my experience, some emotions, especially anger, require movement to be released.
thank you marty. this is lovely. how do you feel with this type of practice with physical pain or illness? i tried something much like this last night and it was lovely and supportive experience.

Kaitlyn,
Thanks for your note. Clearly we are communicating.
Yse I have been a few times to Temple of the Universe. I first started going their when my guru, Yogi Amrit Deai was staying there.
Haven’t been for quite a while.

Do you suggest going to the root cause of why emotions erupt? Where do they come from?

No. Our stories about the past are just that.

Thanks for continuing to deepen the conversation.
My point was, in the absense of knowing the trigger (see my post on anxiety), we can release the emotions. In many (most?) cases the trigger is clear.
Of course we need to get out of abusive relationships.
BTW, punching a pillow is not an application of the process I described. :)
So your method eliminates the emotions entirely without the deeper work from understanding and integration?
I guess the work I did and teach is pointless?

Great tips for a very valuable practice! Thank you.
I learned similar techniques through yoga. It really opened up a whole new dimension on my emotional landscape.
Heart creates different kind of harmons : I combine bio with emotion to heal. Say “I need be happy” and the pain is gone!

Good point. The practice can also be used for physical pain. Thanks for bringing ths up.
